Curing That Not-So-Fresh Feeling…

Enjoyment - free happy woman enjoying sunsetHere are 5 natural ways to stave off an emerging yeast infection:

  1. Reduce your sugar intake or better yet, cut it out altogether. This means all sugars including fruit and alcohol. Sugars feed the yeasties and help them multiply. You’ll do yourself a huge favor by turning down that mojito or piece of mango…
  2. Eat virgin coconut oil each day. Coconut oil is a powerful anti-fungal and the fatty acids it contains disrupt the cellular structure of the Candida (yeast).
  3. Rinse with apple cider vinegar. Mix 1/3 c. of ACV (I like Braggs brand) with 2/3 c. of water and rinse while sitting on the toilet or in the bathtub. It may tingle a bit at first but it should not burn. If it really burns, it’s possible your infection has already developed and the skin is more tender than usual. Symptoms should subside within 3-5 days.
  4. Yogurt, not to eat. If you do not have apple cider vinegar or your itching is really bad, instead of ACV, good quality plain yogurt can be really helpful because it introduces good bacteria to the party. These good bacteria help fight off the bad guys. It also has a cooling effect on your hot and bothered bits. Buy a plain, full fat variety with several probiotics listed in the ingredients, such as L. acidophilis, L. bulgaricus, and bifidus. Do not buy one with sugar or fruit and do not use Greek yogurt because it becomes grainy as it dries and can irritate already delicate tissue. Soak a tampon in a teaspoon or two of the yogurt, making sure the entire tampon is covered. The tampon will swell up considerably so go slowly when inserting it into your vagina. I recommend doing this while sitting on the toilet or while in the tub because it can get a wee bit messy. Leave the tampon in for about 30 minutes. After removing, make sure to wear cotton underwear and a pad. Do this before going to bed. In the morning, rinse just the outer and inner lips (not the inside of your vulva), and reapply the yogurt after rinsing. Within 3-5 days, symptoms should be gone.

Note that these are tips to try right at the first signs of an imbalance and do not preclude seeing a healthcare practitioner, especially if your symptoms worsen. If all else fails and you end up with a full blown yeast infection, consider a homeopathic remedy instead of the chemical ones you find in most pharmacies. Vitanica’s Yeast Arrest is a great homeopathic insert made from good oils and herbs that can be found on Amazon. I keep a supply in my refrigerator just in case. (This way they don’t melt and they feel really nice going in.) You will need to use scissors to open them and you will want to wear a pad for a few days, changing the pad regularly. While these magic bullets help return your hoo hah to the honeypot it is meant to be, note that they may weaken some birth control methods, such as condoms, for 24 to 48 hours after it clears your system.

Good luck out there (and down there)!
